91黑料 showcased Malaysia鈥檚 approach to developing future-ready artificial intelligence (AI) talent at the China International Big Data Industry Expo 2026 in Guiyang, China on 27 August 2026. Prof. Dr Ooi Chee Pun, Dean of Faculty of Artificial Intelligence & Engineering (FAIE), delivered an invited presentation titled 鈥淎I Development in Malaysia: Roles of Higher Learning Institutions in Developing AI Talents鈥 during the International Cooperation on Innovation in Large Models and Data Intelligence Exchange Activity.

He shared Malaysia鈥檚 aspiration to become an AI-driven innovation nation by 2030 and emphasised the role of higher learning institutions in preparing talent through experiential learning, industry exposure and real-world AI applications. Prof. Ooi also presented MMU鈥檚 approach to AI education through FAIE and its Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Artificial Intelligence, which integrates AI knowledge with engineering practice. Students are exposed to areas such as machine learning, computer vision and generative AI, with applications spanning robotics, IoT, autonomous systems, smart cities, healthcare and intelligent infrastructure.

He further highlighted MMU鈥檚 efforts to create an AI-enabled university ecosystem, where AI is integrated not only into academic programmes but also across the student journey, including learning, academic performance, industry matching and employability. This approach reflects MMU鈥檚 efforts to equip students with both the technical competencies and practical experience needed to navigate an increasingly AI-driven economy.

The presentation also highlighted MMU鈥檚 collaboration with industry and government in developing AI capabilities, including its longstanding partnership with ZTE, as well as the University鈥檚 growing AI ecosystem supported by the AI Transformation Centre (AIX) and 13 specialised AI laboratories. Through its participation in the expo, MMU continues to expand its international engagement while showcasing its contributions to AI education, applied research and talent development for industry, government and society.
