The Learning Institute for Empowerment (LIfE) organised the ESG Talk@MMU concurrently at both campuses on 21 January 2026, offering students and staff valuable insights into sustainability, responsible business practices, and the role of individuals and organisations in shaping Malaysia鈥檚 sustainable future.
At the Cyberjaya campus, the session was delivered by Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Chairman of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Malaysia. He was warmly welcomed by Prof. Dato鈥 Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su鈥檜d, President of MMU, together with other university leaders.
Titled 鈥淵our Role in Malaysia鈥檚 Sustainable Future: From Comprehension to Real Action鈥, the talk explored how students and professionals can actively contribute to sustainability initiatives, from adopting responsible practices in their personal lives to influencing organisational strategies. Students gained a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship, the importance of ESG principles, and practical steps to make a measurable impact on Malaysia鈥檚 sustainable development goals.
The talk also emphasised the importance of youth involvement in community initiatives, environmental volunteering, green innovation and digital advocacy. By supporting circular economy practices and engaging in national efforts such as the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), young people can play a meaningful role in shaping Malaysia鈥檚 sustainable future. The session concluded with a call for students to turn awareness into action and contribute actively at individual, community and national levels. Following the sharing session, Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar also presented prizes to the winners of the SDG projects by MMU students.
Meanwhile, at the Melaka campus, the ESG Talk featured Mr. Venu Mahendra a/l Muniandy, General Manager of Group ESG & Sustainability at Gamuda Berhad, with the presentation titled 鈥淪ustainability Vision to Value: Accelerating the Industry鈥. The session highlighted how sustainability initiatives are integrated into business strategy, transforming industries while creating long-term value. Students learned about real-world ESG implementation in large organisations, the role of corporate responsibility in driving innovation, and how sustainability goals can align with business growth. This exposure provided students with practical perspectives on sustainability-driven leadership and strategic decision-making in the corporate sector. Towards the end of the session, a prize-giving ceremony was held, during which Dr. Rohaidah Mashudi, Deputy Dean of LIfE, presented awards to the winners of the SDG projects undertaken by MMU students.
Both sessions offered interactive discussions and Q&A segments, giving students the opportunity to engage directly with industry leaders, reflect on the application of ESG principles in different contexts, and consider how they can incorporate sustainability into their future careers.
