A group of students from the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Engineering (FAIE), together with Prof. Ir. Dr. Hezerul Abdul Karim, took part in the Electro Tech Summer Institute (ETSI), a one-week academic exchange programme held in Indonesia in October. The programme was jointly organised by Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), and MMU. The student group, which also included participants from UiTM led by Dr. Nur Nabila Mohamed, engaged in a series of knowledge-sharing sessions with UNDIP students and lecturers.
The sessions highlighted UNDIP鈥檚 strong emphasis on innovation and sustainability, particularly projects focused on waste recycling and environmental engineering. During the programme, Prof. Ir. Dr. Hezerul also delivered a guest lecture titled 鈥淎utomatic Film Censorship using Deep Learning.鈥
As part of the academic itinerary, the participants visited Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Indonesia鈥檚 national electricity grid company, and Telkomsel, the nation鈥檚 largest telecommunications provider. These industry visits provided students with valuable insights into Indonesia鈥檚 energy and telecommunications landscapes, exposing them to ongoing developments and technology adoption in both sectors.
The programme also included a visit to the UNDIP Robotics Team, which competed in the ABU Robocon competition, an event in which MMU students also actively participate. The Robotics Lab tour enabled students from both institutions to exchange ideas on robot design and automation, fostering technical collaboration and peer learning.
In addition to academic and industrial exposure, the participants explored Semarang鈥檚 rich historical and cultural attractions. This cultural immersion allowed students to better appreciate Indonesia鈥檚 diverse heritage and further strengthened cross-cultural understanding between the groups. The programme marked a valuable step in fostering global engagement and shared learning.
