91şÚÁĎ took home 22 medals at the 22nd Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2023 which was held in hybrid mode from 16th until 18th March 2023. The MTE-IIA 2023 received approximately 508 submissions, across public, and private universities, research institutions, and centres from 18 countries.

Our researchers grabbed 2 Outstanding Awards, 1 Special Award, 5 Gold Awards, 8 Silver Awards, and 6 Bronze Awards during the event. The following is a list of medal winners from MMU:

FCI Students Emerge Winners at Game Development Competition /fci/gamedev_2023/ Fri, 10 Mar 2023 13:13:04 +0000 /fci/?p=8565

We are proud to share that two students of the Game Development programme from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI) namely Raven Lim Zhe Xuan and Lim Jiann Shen bagged cash prizes of RM3,000 and RM750 as First Runner-up and Finalist during the finale stage in the Game Development Competition on 25 February 2023.

The competition was organised by Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC), in collaboration with Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TARUMT), Magnus Game Studio, and Big Domain. More than 140 participants with over 40 project submissions were received and evaluated to be selected for the Top 10 Finalists in the competition.

This achievement was a result of the Industry Handshake Programme (IHP), where students work on industry-based problems/ motivation as part of their subject assignment or project that is monitored by the subject lecturer and industry mentor. For this Game Production project, the students received guidance from Mr. Albert Quek as the subject lecturer and Mr. Tan Zhi Wei, Founder of DreamTree Studio as the industry mentor.

The students also went to two intensive pitching sessions with Ms. Putri Syaidatul Akma from the Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) and Mr. Albert in the game pitch as well as deck preparation and presentation.

Congratulations to MMU for clinching the Gold Award under the Education & Learning category at the Putra Brand Awards 2022 on 13 January 2023. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President of MMU received the accolade during the Gala Presentation Ceremony held at One World Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. MMU first received the Silver Award in 2019 and the Bronze medal in 2021 for the same category.

Putra Brand Awards or also known as the People’s Choice Awards recognises the brand building as an integral business investment and is measured by consumer preference. This is the 13th year of the Putra Brand Award, where a total of 151 awards were presented in various categories, namely media, communications, banking, e-commerce, entertainment, and others. MMU is grateful for the continued support given by the people as well as MMU community for the university to continue delivering the best quality education to the digital future leaders.

Congratulations to 91şÚÁĎ (MMU) for being listed among the Top 10 in the Private Higher Education Institution at the Graduates’ Choice Award  (GCA) at Sunway Resort on 5 January 2023.  Dr. Ong Jeen Wei, Director of Alumni Engagement, Career and Entrepreneurship Development (ACED) representing the university to receive the award and certificate during the ceremony. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President of MMU also graced the occasion with his presence and was invited to become one of the award presenters at this prestigious ceremony.

Organised by Talentbank, this award ceremony announced the nation’s Most Preferred Graduate Employers to Work for in 2022. The Graduates’ Choice Award or known as GCA is Malaysia’s most authoritative graduate employer branding award and recognises 48 respective industries including accounting and professional services, e-commerce, automotive, telecommunications, and others. FCI Researchers Obtain “Best Paper Award” at ICOCO 2022 /fci/icoco2022/ Fri, 09 Dec 2022 13:10:20 +0000 /fci/?p=8382

A research team containing a postgraduate student and lecturers of the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI) with their collaborators obtained the “Best Paper Award” at the IEEE International Conference on Computing (ICOCO) 2022, recently.

The postgraduate student namely Mubdiul Hossain presented a research paper entitled “Optimized n-Based Implementation of B-COSFIRE Filter for Retinal Blood Vessel Segmentation”. The proposal highlighted an optimised retinal blood vessel segmentation method for an Android-based smartphone platform. The proposed methods may allow for analysing fundus images in resource-limited settings such as clinics in rural or remote areas. Thus, offering a mobile solution for retinal screening at a cheaper cost.

The paper is supported by the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) under the Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). The grant is led by Dr. Aziah Ali and members from FCI namely Dr. Noramiza Hashim, Dr. Wan Noorshahida Mohd Isa, with their collaborators, Prof. Dr. Aini Hussain and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wan Mimi Diyana Wan Zaki, who is also an MMU Alumnus. The team has been invited to publish an extended version of their paper; to be submitted to the Journal of Cases on Information Technology (JCIT) – IGI Global, which is a Scopus Q2 Journal.

On 9th November 2022, a group of four students from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI) namely Loh Yue Yi, Ngo Xing Tung, Sia Mandy and  Dylan Lim Yong Sen emerged as Champion at DataWorks Challenge 2022. The team received a Harvey Norman voucher worth RM2,000 and crystal trophies for their achievement presented by Mr. Nick Swann, Business IT Manager.

Mentored by Dr. Ng Kok Why, Deputy Dean of FCI, the MMU (Fant4stic) team defeated other teams from different varsities namely Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP)  during the final round of the competition.

Organised by ExxonMobile, the competition was participated by 47 teams from 7 universities. The participants were given one week to develop the product solution, and only 5 teams were selected for the final round. Our team pitched their solutions and encountered the Q&A session with confidence and finesse, where the session was also participated by the top management of ExxonMobile.

Let us congratulate Nyaanaputhraan A/L Prakabakaran from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI) for being listed in the Top 12 Grand Finalists in the Hong Leong Bank Hackathon Challenge 2022 that was held recently. He bagged two awards, a consolation prize and Special Award (Perseverance and Commitment) during the event. The special award was given to him as he completed the entire hackathon all by himself.

Besides that, another MMU team consisting of Vincent Chan from the Faculty of Business (FOB), Ahmad Johan from the Faculty of Management (FOM), and Resyinder Ramish from the Faculty of Creative Multimedia (FCM) also participated in the challenge, and one of the Top 40 finalists. The competition aimed for participants to re-imagine banking in the metaverse as they aspire to have products and solutions that are personalised and friendly-user to be utilised in both the physical and virtual worlds.

The participants used their knowledge of blockchain technology, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, augmented reality (AR)/ virtual reality (VR), and Big Data to hack our-of-the-box solutions to solve the problem statements provided, which related to the metaverse and hyper-personalisation. The participants from various varsities, start-ups, and companies came to compete for the final demo pitch on 30th October 2022. As a result, Nyaanaputhraan who won 2 awards walked home with a cash prize of RM1,000 and Reshinder is offered a job opportunity at Hong Leong Bank.

91şÚÁĎ hosted the Digital Futures International Congress (DIFCON 2022) via the virtual platform from 25th July until 27th July 2022. With its theme, Innovating for Sustainability, the international conference gathered scholars from different backgrounds including engineering, information technology, social science, law, and multimedia.

Prof. Emerita Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail, President of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) officiated the opening ceremony of the programme on 25th July 2022. The virtual ceremony was also graced by the presence of Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President of MMU welcomed the participants. The three-day conference received 430 paper submissions from more than 15 countries, where only 290 papers were accepted and presented during the event. The event also featured 20 keynote speakers to provide deeper insights and knowledge on the topics.

It also had 6 co-located conferences namely 91şÚÁĎ Engineering Conference (MECON), International Conference on Communication, Language, Education and Social Sciences (CLESS), International Conference on Computer, Information Technology, and Intelligent Computing (CITIC), International Conference on Law and Digitalisation (ICLD), International Conference on Technology and Innovation Management (ICTIM) and International Conference on Creative Multimedia (ICCM). The programme was concluded successfully with the announcement of Best Paper Awards and other awards.

We would like to extend our heartiest congratulations to Selwyn Darryl Kessler, Loo Wei Xiong, and Wong Ee Thiing from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI) and Faculty of Information Science and Technology (FIST) for winning the Grand prize together with three teams from the other countries under the category of Cloud Track.

The result was released in a live broadcast on 25th June 2022, which was participated by Prof. Ir. Dr. Hairul Azhar Abdul Rashid, Vice President of Research, Industrial Collaboration and Engagement (VP RICE) together with Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Junaidi Abdullah, the Dean of FCI and Dr. Ng Kok Why, the team mentor. Prof. Hairul delivered a short speech during the session.

The team competed on the world stage virtually via Shenzhen, China on 18th June 2022. A total of 132 teams from 43 countries and regions participated on the world stage. Under the Cloud Track, the participants took 8 hours non-stop to answer a few difficult lab questions involving four areas: Cloud, Storage, Big Data, and Artificial Intelligence during the competition. The competition served as an avenue for students to compete and exchange ideas, boost their ICT knowledge, and foster their capabilities in innovating through new technologies and platforms.
