The FAIE Industry Forum 2025, themed “From Framework to Future: Leveraging AI to Transform Malaysia’s Smart City Vision into Reality,” was held on 20 November 2025 at the NMES Lab, Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Engineering (FAIE), 91 (MMU), Cyberjaya. The event brought together around 200 participants, including students, industry leaders, government agencies, and academic staff.

Jointly organized by the FAIE Industrial Linkage Committee (ILC), IEEE MMU Student Branch, and IEM, in collaboration with PLANMalaysia, MIMOS Berhad, and Dell Technologies, the forum featured insights from Ts. Ir. Dr. Nordin Ramli (MIMOS) and TS Koay (Dell Technologies Malaysia). PLANMalaysia contributed via a recorded presentation by TPr. Dr. Muhammad Hakimi bin Mohd Hussain, and the session was moderated by Ir. Dr. Siva Priya Thiagarajah.

Discussions centered on the Malaysia Smart City Framework, the integration of AI, AIoT, and 5G into urban systems, and the governance and ethical considerations essential for responsible AI deployment. Real-world examples highlighted advancements in emergency response, smart surveillance, traffic optimization, and energy-efficient city management. Speakers emphasized the need for interoperable data systems, robust digital infrastructure, and cultivating future-ready talent equipped for AI-driven innovation.

The forum provided valuable insights that strengthened participants’ understanding of Malaysia’s smart city direction and reinforced the importance of cross-sector collaboration in advancing AI-enabled urban development.

The forum was jointly organized by the Industrial Linkage Committee of FOE, the IEEE Signal Processing Society Malaysia Chapter, and the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM). The forum aimed to showcase global trends in AI’s impact on healthcare, providing an overview of challenges and opportunities unique to Malaysia. The forum was open to the public and was recognized as a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) activity by the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) for individuals seeking to gather CPD hours for the annual renewal of their professional engineering membership.

The panelists included Ir. Prof. Dr. Mohammad Faizal Ahmad Fauzi (Professor, FOE, MMU) and Mr. Jeffrey Mohammad Noor (Senior Principal Assistant Director, Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia). The event was successfully moderated by Dr. Aziah Ali, (Lecturer, Faculty of Computing and Informatives, MMU).

During the forum, Professor Faizal highlighted recent AI healthcare developments in Malaysia, emphasizing their potential and uniqueness. He discussed AI’s role in addressing challenges across diverse regions and provided guidelines for ethical deployment. The conversation extended to leveraging AI in healthcare’s digital transformation, showcasing use cases for improved outcomes. Collaborative opportunities between researchers and industry stakeholders were outlined. Mr. Jeffrey Noor outlined AI’s role in Malaysia’s healthcare strategy, showcasing initiatives and addressing challenges. Examples illustrated AI’s impact on resource allocation, patient care, and administrative efficiency. The Ministry’s approach to ensuring equitable healthcare access using AI was explained. Lastly, collaborative efforts with the government, healthcare institutions, and the private sector were discussed.

In conclusion, the FOE Industry Forum 2023 successfully fostered collaboration, offering insights into AI’s role in healthcare for Malaysia. The event was streamed live via MMU YouTube and Facebook channel, which received more than 500 views at the end of the event.

The forum was jointly organised by the Industrial Linkage Committee of FOE, the Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), the MMU-IEM Student Section, and the IEEE MMU Student Chapter. The forum aimed to showcase the challenges and roles of different industries with regards to their involvement in developing technology to solve the problems related to food security. The forum was opened to the public and was recognised as a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) activity by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) for individuals seeking to gather CPD hours for the annual renewal of their professional engineering membership.

The panelists included Mr. Tan Han Wei, Chief Technology Officer, Sustainable Harvest Sdn Bhd, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Samsuzana Abdul Aziz, Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia. The event was successfully moderated by Dr. Foo Yee Loo, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering.

During the forum, the panelist shared their views on how the interruption of the global supply chain affects local food supply, emphasizing the need to have a continuous local food supply in facing any unexpected challenges in the future. They highlighted the potential of smart agriculture technology to increase the yield and quality of agricultural products. They discussed the current penetration rate of smart technologies in Malaysia’s agricultural activities and the local farmers’ acceptance level of the technology. The dialogue also covered how universities can groom talent to contribute to the smart agriculture industry. They emphasized that engineers must understand farmers’ problems and design a specific solution based on their needs. They also highlighted that smart agriculture does not intend to substitute the workforce but aims to reduce inefficiency. In conclusion, the collaborative efforts among various parties, including government agencies, research institutions, agricultural industry players, and engineers, will increase the adoption of smart farming, contributing to a continuous, high-quality food supply in Malaysia.

With its theme, Harnessing Digitalisation & Technology in Facing COVID-19 Pandemic, the forum aimed to showcase the challenges, risks, and ways forward as different organizations harness digitalisation and technology in facing the challenges during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The forum panelists included Sanjay Vaghasia, Chief Technology & Information Officer Ooredoo, Myanmar Ltd; Mr. Hizam Ghazali, General Manager / Head of IT Solutions & Design, Group IT & Digital, Telekom Malaysia Berhad and Mr. Abdul Karim Fakir bin Ali, Chief Network Officer (CNO), Maxis Berhad. The event was successfully moderated by Ir. Dr. Goh Vik Tor, Senior Lecturer from FOE.

During the forum, the panelists shared how their organisations have adopted digitalisation and shape the telecommunications industry and other industries. They discussed the pervasive effect of digitalization in our everyday life and activities. The dialogue also covered how universities can groom talent to prepare for digitalisation and its legal effects. In conclusion, the forum concluded that digitalisation does not intend to substitute the workforce but instead aims to reduce inefficiency. The panelists agreed that the most pressing task ahead is to build awareness and a sense of urgency to ensure digitalisation is embraced without further delay so that Malaysia does not get left behind in the digital arena.
